Introducing New Purchase Options for Wiley-Blackwell Journal Backfiles
Institutional customers have the option to:
- Pick and choose backfiles at the individual title level
- Purchase backfiles in newly expanded Subject Collections with no overlapping titles, giving you access to the complete backfile in a specific discipline
- If you have already purchased any of the Wiley Backfile Collections, you can supplement them with access to the additional titles at a special discount
All titles and Collections are available for a one-time fee with no running costs, providing you with perpetual access to the years of content bought. Volume discounts are available depending on your order total - contact your Account Manager for details.

Incomplete Backfiles/Missing Content
Sourcing of backfile volumes for digitization can be difficult for some journals and for older material in particular. Rather than delaying publication we will publish some journal backfiles with a maximum of 2% of issues missing while we locate those issues for digitization. In any such case we will clearly identify the journal backfile and the missing issues and will seek the help of customers in tracking them down.
If you spot any missing issues or articles within a digitized backfile which we have not ourselves identified, please let us know by contacting libraryinfo@wiley.com.
Pricing and Licensing Options
- Backfile Subject Collections
Wiley and Blackwell Journal Backfile content has now been grouped into newly combined Backfile Collections. Libraries that previously purchased Wiley Backfile Collections can easily upgrade their collection with Blackwell titles that have been added to the existing collections. There are also 15 new subject-based collections that are now available for purchase. All collections contain unique titles with no overlap. - Title-by-Title
Customers can choose to purchase backfiles on a title-by-title basis. There is no obligation to purchase every title in a collection.
Backfile purchases will continue to be offered for a one-time fee and include perpetual access with no archive/maintenance fee.
"Complete Your Collection" Discount
Any customer that previously purchased a Wiley Backfile collection is encouraged to purchase the new titles that have been added to that collection. If at any time a customer that had purchased a Wiley collection purchases all of the new titles in that collection, the customer is entitled to an additional 5% discount on top of whatever volume discount may be offered.
Archival rights to Journal Backfiles
All journal backfiles in the program are licensed with archival rights. For any journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of a society, professional association or any other third party, Wiley-Blackwell has the contractual right to maintain the journal backfile on our online platform and to provide access to it to licensed institutions in perpetuity.
Platform and Format
The backfiles are accessible through the homepage of the current journal on Wiley InterScience. Articles are presented in PDF format with XML-based headers, abstracts and references.
Selected Backfiles Available for Free
A number of journals provide access to their backfiles on Wiley InterScience at no charge, usually in cases where a society or funding body has paid for the cost of digitization.

The backfiles of more than 60 journals are available through JSTOR.
