We are working hard to ensure a smooth transition for all customers and users, and thank you for your patience during this time of change. Following is a list of the known issues which we are working on as a top priority:
As of June 30, 2008, Blackwell journal contentincluding current issues, backfiles, and issues published online before printhas been migrated to Wiley InterScience. Please note that not all content will be available on June 30th. Some back issues, ceased journals, and other content will not be loaded until after the initial transition.
The initial integration of Blackwell content into Wiley InterScience will enable users to search across 6000 online books and 3 million journal articles in over 1400 journals on a single site.
We have transferred most Blackwell journal access rights to Wiley InterScience so that users have continuous access to licensed content. However, there are some licenses which have not transferred effectively and we are aware of this. Please contact your Account Manager or log your request with our Wiley-Blackwell customer services team so that we can fix the access for your institution as soon as possible: interscience.wiley.com/support
Wiley InterScience offers access through IP authentication, Athens, TPS, and remote username and password. Remote username and password access has been migrated to the Wiley InterScience Roaming Access facility which allows individuals to gain access to their institution's holdings remotely for 120 days if they first set up their access while they are within their customer's IP network. Wiley InterScience will not support federated access management systems like Shibboleth in 2008. We plan to add this development to the new combined platform during 2009.
Existing Synergy URLs and links will redirect to the content on Wiley InterScience.
OpenURL links are currently not redirecting at the journal level but instead default to the Wiley InterScience homepage. We are working on this and will have it resolved as soon as possible.
Yes, DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) are persistent and so will continue to work after the move to Wiley InterScience. If you find that your DOI link is not working, it may be because that article is not yet loaded onto Wiley InterScience.
The recommended method for linking to any article, regardless of what publishers' website it first appeared on, is with a URL using the DOI configured like this:
For the Library/Customer Administration area, we have matched most Synergy and Wiley InterScience accounts so you will be able to manage all your Wiley and Blackwell journals using your existing Wiley InterScience Administrator login here: interscience.wiley.com/customer
NOTE: If you do not already have a Wiley InterScience administrator ID, you will receive further instructions after the transition.
Yes, we have upgraded Wiley InterScience to accommodate the addition of Blackwell books, journals and customers.
We will offer global customer service including telephone and email support 24 x 5 during the transition period and self-help online support 24 x 7. To contact customer services now visit interscience.wiley.com/support.
What's going to happen to the usage data for Blackwell journals?
From August onwards usage data for Blackwell journals will be available on Wiley InterScience. This will be presented in a separate report but in the same format as that offered for Wiley journals. Our intention is that usage data for the period January 2008 to June 2008 for Blackwell titles will be available from Wiley InterScience in September 2008. Blackwell usage data for the period January 2006 to December 2007 will be made available through Wiley InterScience later in 2008. Blackwell usage data for the period prior to December 2005 will no longer be available after the transition in June 2008. We will not be migrating this data across to Wiley InterScience.
We will continue to support the separate sales models for Blackwell and Wiley journals in 2008 and therefore all Blackwell online journal customers are entitled to access their usage data. Wiley customers licensed under the Basic Access License will continue to not be entitled to usage data for 2008. Usage data for Wiley journals is available to customers with the Enhanced Access License in 2008.
Will Wiley InterScience be COUNTER-compliant?
Wiley InterScience is scheduled to become COUNTER-compliant for journals soon after the transition of Blackwell content on June 30th. When this happens, the COUNTER JR1 report will be available and we will also retain the separate backfiles reporting because many customers also want this.
What about Blackwell's online books?
1500+ scholarly, professional and clinical books from Blackwell Publishing are already being loaded onto Wiley InterScience OnlineBooks. For more information about licensing these titles please visit interscience.wiley.com/onlinebooks or contact your Wiley-Blackwell Account Manager.
Please note that online access to Blackwell Reference Online, Blackwell's major reference works such as the Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology and the International Encyclopedia of Communication, and Wiley's non-journal content will be unaffected by the integration of the journals currently on Blackwell Synergy with Wiley InterScience.
Will Wiley InterScience include the Blackwell subject disciplines?
Yes, we will be adding Blackwell subject disciplines to Wiley InterScience so that users will be able to browse by subject, search results by subject, and filter title lists as they can now but with the addition of Blackwell's social sciences, humanities and other STM and professional disciplines.
Will Wiley InterScience include access icons?
No, these will not be incorporated into the features of Wiley InterScience. However, we are aware of the importance of this feature for libraries and their users and plan to include it in the new platform during 2009.
Will e-mail table of content (E-TOC) and other alerts continue to work?
Yes, we will transfer the accounts for all registered users on Blackwell Synergy to Wiley InterScience so that customers continue to receive the journal E-TOCs and other alerts that they have signed up for.
Why is this change happening?
We need to make the transition from two systems to one in order to prepare for the launch of the new combined Wiley-Blackwell online service in 2009. There will be benefits gained for customers and users who will be able to access all Wiley-Blackwell's content, including over 1400 journals across multiple disciplines and 5000 online books on a single site from July 2008.
How can I learn more about how Wiley InterScience works?
User guides and e-learning modules/tutorials are available to access on our website here: interscience.wiley.com/tutorials.
We are also offering free training webinars which we invite you to register for by going to this tutorials site and going here https://wiley-interscience.webex.com and clicking on 'Upcoming'.
In addition, we have produced this Terminology Converter (PDF 668k) so that you can see how features on Blackwell Synergy will be transitioned to equivalent features on Wiley InterScience, and what those features will be called.
What is the plan for the launch of the new platform for 2009?
We will be launching a next-generation online service for all Wiley-Blackwell journals, books, reference works, databases, and other Wiley resources in early 2009. This will include many of the best features of the current platforms and more, enabling us to deliver even greater publishing capabilities and customer value for the future. We are undertaking focus groups with users drawn from across the research and library communities which is helping us to develop the service in response to customer needs. More information about the new service will be provided well in advance of the launch date in 2009.
Please continue to watch this page ( interscience.wiley.com/transition ) as we will add more answers to Frequently Asked Questions and update you on further developments.
