Abstract

AbstractReferences

After 200 years of gallicisation, the French island of Corsica is experiencing for the first time institutional support for the Corsican language. In 1999, measures were introduced to make the teaching of Corsican compulsory for all students of secondary-school age, starting with the cohort of that academic year. Mandatory Corsican language classes have long been an aim of language activists on the island, but it is important to measure the public reaction to these measures, certainly in order to evaluate the chances of reviving the Corsican language in the shadow of a powerful, dominant H language, French.
