ABSTRACT

SYNOPSIS

This article reports the clinical features and results of treatment of 60 patients with chronic cluster headache (CCH) with data on extended follow-up of 46 patients (median 4 years). Treatment was generally difficult and often "trial and error" in nature. Lithium carbonate, methysergide, corticosteroids and indomethacin were of some limited usefulness as prophylactic agents. Symptomatic therapy by a variety of agents was evaluated but commonly, daily usage resulted in side effects and excessive dosage. Longterm follow-up revealed that 59% of patients were either free of headache (33%) or categorized as satisfactory by patient and examiner (26%). Fourteen (52%) of these had undergone a surgical procedure.
