ABSTRACT

This essay discusses the significance of African languages in contexts in which English figures as a dominant language both as a result of colonialism and of its current status as a global vehicle of communication and interaction. Kenya and Uganda are used as examples of places where practices of resistance to anglophony and projects for the promotion of African languages are carried out by communities, non-governmental organizations and researchers.
